about

‘In and Out’ is the second single from ephemerals’ third full length psychedelia and jazz infused soul LP ‘egg tooth’ and it is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown from the multinational outfit…

Centred around a tight soul groove and a memorable singalong chorus it’s easy to understand the initial attraction but as with all great songs it’s not just beautiful chords and melodies. The track also boasts subtle complexities with an alternating compound time signature and chromatic Fender Rhodes flourishes providing hidden depths.

Songwriter Hillman Mondegreen’s lyrics focus around the life and journeys of Siddartha Gautama (The Buddha) and ephemerals’ singer Wolfgang Valbrun perfectly captures the sentiment in his emotive and sweet-on-the-ear tones. The horns and Rhodes lead the line with acrobatic melodies over colourful chords while the rhythm section plays firmly in the pocket.

In addition to the original mix Tru Thoughts alumni and self-proclaimed ‘House-for-people-who-dance’ producer - Titeknots gives the track some up-tempo afro-funk party feels with a swinging rework. Serving up a rolling funk bass underneath piano stabs, memorable horn licks and choppy afro guitar rhythms it’s a veritable dance feast for the discerning club connoisseur. No surprise to hear that he’s a favourite of the likes of Jamz Supernova and Monki over on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra at the moment…

Titeknots has also proven to be a generous soul as he offers up not only the regular remix but also a radio edit and kickass dub mix to provide something for everyone. How thoughtful!

But that’s not all! Fellow Jalapeno label mate and rising electronica/hip hop producer Asta Hiroki has recently won plaudits on BBC 6Music and across the online press world (We Plug Good Music, Exclaim! & Sphere Of Hip Hop to name a few). He gets in on the remix act too and flips the track into a lo-fi abstract hip hop beat. Blending the vocal with a hybrid of jazzy chords and glitch aesthetics over shuffling beats, the track takes on a more ethereal tone than the original in a style that reminds the listener of Samiyam and Flying Lotus. And for those that want to practice their freestyles or cuts or simply prefer instrumental music there is a ‘sans vocal’ mix for good measure.
